up in smoke
our old plan B
becomes new plan A
smoke mingles
and dissolves –
bar talk
curling smoke
she leads him straight
to the bedroom
neighborhood bar
the old timer
defends his position
up in smoke his lungs
Stella, i totally relate to this!
as if
he’d be back in no time–
the hat on the peg
coming in
from the rain
everyone a stranger
last drag,
last swig,
clear the throat,
on to the show
holding his hat my fingers tingle
his energy remains
a cigarette after
another feather
in his hat
Grampa’s cigarettes:
she’ll never admit to him
she likes the smell
Never seen again,
he left only his hat
and burning ash.
somewhere
a songbird distracts him
the visiting uncle
also
pushed aside –
a chair
narcissus in bloom . . .
the gumshoe tells me
I’ve been framed
Don’t be silly; you’re taking the fall…

rising smoke
from another cigarette
his stunted growth
given up smoking
even given up adventure
life it’self?
at the wake
all the stories
not under the hat
hats getting smaller and smaller until the sky
from the sky a red fox grows larger
